Olfactory and Vomeronasal receptor

Analysis of olfactory and vomeronasal receptor subgenomes of mammals

Chemodetection is achieved in mammals by olfaction (detection of odorants and pheromones) and gustatory perception (taste), enabling animals to sense chemicals and identify chemical cues from the environment. In mammals, sensory neurons at the VNO express three different types of pheromone receptor families [V1R, V2R, and formyl peptide-like receptors (FPR)]. Despite the detailed characterization of the repertoires of pheromone receptors, such as V1R and V2R, across several mammalian genomes, including mouse, rat, dog, human, cattle, goat, sheep, little is known about these in domestic pigs. Therefore, our laboratory analyzes the gene repertoire and expression pattern of pheromone receptors in pigs. On the other hand, we investigate on the genetic diversity of pig Olfactory Receptors (OR) genes from different kind of pig breeds.
